This week’s Friday Fibers Roundup features a variety of exhibitions, statements, and interviews around the central theme of quilting

1) War and Pieced: The Annette Gero Collection of Quilts from Military Fabrics exhibition is organized by the American Folk Art Museum, New York, in collaboration with the International Quilt Study Center & Museum, University of Lincoln–Nebraska.

2) This video highlights the wonderful process of Sankalan embroidery from Victoria & Albert Museum’s exhibition Fabric of India.

3) “The Centuries-Old Tradition of Military Quilting Is Getting Its First Exhibition in the U.S.” by Jason Daley celebrates the art and craft of soldiers at war and offers insight into life in the military (via Smithsonian Mag).

4) Caitlin McCormack explores the decay and remains of once-living things in her intricate crochet work of fantastical intertwined skeletons of humans, birds, snakes, devils, and two-headed bats (via Colossal).

5) This memorable segment from “Antiques Roadshow” first aired in 2003, and is infamous among quilt historians and anyone with basic knowledge of textile history (via Willy Wonka Quilts).

6) “The Wartime Quilts Made by Men from Military Uniforms” by Allison Meier also examines the exhibition at the American Folk Art Museum in New York with wartime quilts made by British soldiers from their uniforms in the 18th and 19th centuries (via Hyperallergic).

7) “From Plant to Page, a Conservatory Grows Trees to Turn into Handmade Paper” by Diana Sette looks at the Morgan Conservatory in Cleveland, Ohio that is dedicated to conserving paper-making traditions and the material’s artistic and functional future (via Hyperallergic).

8) The quilts in the exhibition Making Memories: Quilts as Souvenirs embodies particular memories and serves as a reminder of places, people, events, and ideas. The show is on display through March 18th, 2018 at the Art Institute of Chicago.

9) Sacred Scraps: Quilt and Patchwork Traditions of Central Asia is an exhibition curated by Pat Hickman and Gail Hovey at the International Quilt Study Center and Museum (IQSCM) in Lincoln, Nebraska.
