Papyrus Book, 2021
paper yarn, handmade butoon 8" x 9" x 1"
Handwoven Book Inspired by ancient papyrus, I wove a continuous sheet with paper warp and weft, folded it and bound it into a handmade book. Weaving The theme of paper inspired me to use paper yarns from Japan. I had just 3 colours - brown, white and blue which became both the warp and the weft. The colours on hand gave me the idea of making a book - brown for the cover, white paper and blue for the lines and the "writing". Finishing touches included sewn binding, a handmade button and adding a spool knitted closure for this journal-style book.

Roots : Exposed, 2021
cotton, wool, bengala dyed wool, raffia 48" x 48" x 7"
Roots : Exposed The roots of this tree spread out to gather water, to hold the ground, to anchor and sustain the tree. We don’t normally see the roots, though they have been more apparent during the recent droughts as they are closer to the surface. During these COVID days and into this winter period, before the return of the light we, like the trees, have turned inward. It is a chance to nourish our roots. Many of the things that normally sustain us – family, friends, community – are not so easy to access or at least not in ways that we are accustomed to. It is like a time of drought – our roots and emotions are often closer to the surface.
