Svalbard: Arctic Glacier Melting, 2021
Wool, Silk, Linen 20" x31"
The Svalbard archipelago is one of the northernmost human settlements in the Arctic. Its ragged terrain is covered with ice. There are over two thousand glaciers on the islands. A melting glacier forms a creek of icy water which inhibits growth of lichens. The plateau was under ice for centuries. As the surface is freed of ice, the silent work of meltwater under moving ice becomes apparent in a modification of an otherwise ragged terrain. Newly exposed lower elevations are smoothed with their valleys filled with crushed stone and small rocks ending in a plateau.
