Eyes Wide Shut, 2023
cloth, acrylic, thread, paper, ink, wood, book board, book cloth, copper, treated plant specimens, cast acrylic Box: 6.7 x 8.7 x 3.5
Reflections on a series of sessions designed to tap into my unconscious in the way that dreams do, this cloth and paper accordion includes snippets of text and descriptions of imagery that were recorded during the sessions by the therapist. Textured snippets extracted from a series of sessions that were designed to tap into my unconscious in the way that dreams do, this cloth and paper accordion includes bits of text and descriptions of imagery that were recorded during my sessions. The accordion text block is created with layers of screen printed, translucent Japanese papers pasted to pre-painted canvas panels. The panels are attached one to the next using concealed wooden rods. Extensive hand and machine stitching throughout make both the front and back side textured and visually lively. Housed in a custom drop-spine box with a collage of treated plant specimens stitched to copper sheeting, then topped with clear plexiglass. Eyes Wide Shut is constructed, housed and presented to allow for multiple display and reading options.

Seeds 2 is a book structure with elongated and halved seed pods a covers and woven fiber page panels. Both book and box tray include seed specimens. It is housed in a drop spine box that includes an accordion book featuring a watercolor, pencil and ink drawing with a hand lettered quote from Walden's unfinished manuscript "Faith in a Seed", 1862. I inherited some large seed pods from my great Aunt Ruth in 1998, along with many other treasures from the natural world. Because Ruth was an inspiration and role model for me, it's important to me to make use of these inherited treasures in ways that preserve their enticing characteristics. It took me a while to land on woven pages for the 'text block' of this book and was a far bigger challenge than I anticipated, especially since I first had to learn the basics of weaving.

Strigaformes, 2024
Book: paper, small mammal bones, thread, yarn, wool, dyed cotton tape Box: book board, synthetic fabric, wood, hot foil, leather, paper, small mammal bones, plant specimens, cast acrylic Closed (box): 11.25 x 9.5 x 1.8
A single sheet of paper that was made at the Morgan Paper Conservatory holds stitched text and, hidden on first glance, a selection of small bones extracted from owl pellets stitched in place. Housed in a bespoke box that forms part of the artwork.I recently realized that I haven't had any owl sightings in far too long, nor have I been able to add to my collection of owl pellets. The distinctive late night or early morning hoots of owls is only rarely heard. Such realizations can send me down a road of dismay and disconnect with the state of the world and my place in it. With the likelihood of being able to go to a previously abundant owl pellet collecting site diminishing, even disappearing, I'm compelled to share some of the tiny bits that so captivate me with others. This was a time consuming book to make. A wish to use materials that enhanced both the look and feel of the paper I started with turned me towards weaving and felting, so I had to learn about both of those techniques for working with fiber. The decision to use woven and felted fiber on the book case necessitated more experimentation, trial and error.
