Embroidery is a fantastic means of embellishing fabric, but we will take the needle and thread to paper to explore the drawn line as a stitched line. The workshop will start by covering the basic stitches and techniques of embroidery, and then move on to the intricacies, challenges, and surprises of putting a needle to paper. We will discuss the various surfaces that are possible, working individually with participants and their own creative ideas and process. After the basic stitches are grasped, a series of assignment prompts will encourage participants on ways that embroidering on paper can give meaning to their drawings, collages, and found paper objects. This workshop is designed for beginners to embroidery, but welcomes anyone interested in taking their stitches in new directions.
