Friday Fibers Roundup: Stitched Together

Our Friday Fibers Roundup for this week spotlights a variety of artists working with traditional and non-traditional forms of embroidery and stitching to create works that are both conceptual and visually enticing.

Katriina Flensburg Mirage 2015, stitched exercise with painted and printed tissues, 12” x 12” x 1.5”. 


1) This video shows the amazingly squishy and mesmerizing sculptures by Chilean artist Serena Garcia Dalla Venezia (via Explore Fiber).

2) “Knotted Thread as Blood, Lace as Genitalia: Inside India’s newest Art Revolution” by Rachel Lopez spotlights a variety of India-based artists who are utilizing cross-stitch and pop-feminism to create work that is humorous, but should be taken seriously (via Hindustan Times).

3) While technically not a textile, this cookie design is definitely inspired by needlework and lace.

4) Australian National University recently had a conference that explored beads, beading, beadwork and Aboriginal people who use these materials and techniques in their work.

5) Mexico-based textile artist Victoria Villasana applies a colorfully whimsical layers of embroidery atop of vintage photographs of artists, musicians, and politicians to lend a sense of empowerment to feminist icons (via Colossal).

6) “Jordan Nassar at Anat Ebgi: Palestinian Cross-stitch Art as Boundary-Breaker” by Leah Ollman reviews the artist’s first solo show in LA, whose work riffs on traditional geometric borders and motifs, but with non-traditional thread colors (via LA Times).

7) “What Sewing Samplers Tell Us About Women’s Lives from the 17th to 19th Centuries” by Allison Meier explores the recovering of a lost history through over 100 samplers (via Hyperallergic).

8) The group UTO mixes materials of photography and video with stitching. While the article is in French, the video is stunning either way (via Lense).

9) The exhibition The Box Project: Uncommon Threads features the work of 36 contemporary fiber artists and is on display at George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum through January 29th, 2018.

10) California Fibers is pleased to present Points of View, a juried exhibition from the artist group’s member base. The show is on display at the Rose Gallery (Santa Monica, CA) until December 16th, 2017.
